As the name implies, I imagine this one being the music for a safe room on a space station. I wanted to move away from piano and strings, which I used for most of the other tracks, so decided to go fully synth.

As space is so massive, I made an attempt to capture that by using a very deep bass contrasted with the higher keys. I also wanted to put a twist on a normal chord progression the first three chords are pretty mundane, followed by the fourth which is unexpected (i - bVI - iv - bV, or Am - F - Dm - Eb).

The chords use a really nice jazz piano voicing - each hand stacks two fifths and are separated by either a semitone or whole tone (e.g. left hand has A E B and the right hand has C G D).

As a composer, I take a lot of influence from soundtracks - in particular, 90s and early 2000s video game soundtracks when graphics were often not good enough to convey the emotion of a scene and voice acting wasn't ubiquitous - the music had to tell the story and let the player know what the characters were feeling.
