about

This album is the first entry in the soundtrack for a video game that I would like to make one day. The initial version of 'Time of the Oppressed' was actually written back in 2013, but I have a tendency to move from one idea to the next without actually finishing anything. During the pandemic, I had a lot of spare time, so decided to finish something for once - this album is the result.

The album very loosely tells a story. The track titles imply the progression of the tale, without being too explicit - I prefer that the listeners fill in the gaps themselves, as I'm sure they can come up with far more interesting ideas than I could express with a small amount of text.

Special thanks to:

- Shannon Leslie for the cover artwork. She did a great job of turning one of my rough sketches into a wonderful piece of fantasy art reminiscent of old fantasy novel covers. Check out her website at: www.shannonleslieart.com

- Dominic Joseph Morris and Josh Suter for their feedback on the music, structure of the album and suggestions for track names. While I'm comfortable writing music, words are much trickier for me and without input the track names would have been much blander.

- Thomas Slimm for understanding my music better than anyone else. Back in 2013 I sent him the first version of 'Time of the Oppressed'. Without prompting, he wrote a description of the scene it was written for and his writing matched what I had in my head. The outline of the story contained within these tracks is his.

- James Aldred for advice about the production side of things, feedback on the compositional side and suggestions for track names. The album sounds better due to his input.

- Ainsley Stones for feedback on the compositions and for teaching me almost everything I know about writing music. He may not have written anything on the album, but his influence is in every track.

- Zeynep Tezer for looking over the notation and offering advice on what notational choices to make. Some of the notation would look unnecessarily complex without her input.

- Bastian Hahn has for being a great musical sounding board. Our discussions really helped me think outside of my limited experience while writing this music.

- Iryna Zastavna for offering a lot of feedback and support while I wrote this album.

about

Nicholas Owen-Petch Sheffield, UK

As a composer, I take a lot of influence from soundtracks - in particular, 90s and early 2000s video game soundtracks when graphics were often not good enough to convey the emotion of a scene and voice acting wasn't ubiquitous - the music had to tell the story and let the player know what the characters were feeling.
